JetBrains has announced the integration of its AI tools – including the upgraded AI Assistant and new coding agent Junie – into its IDEs under a single subscription model, complete with a free tier.
Love it or loathe it, there’s no denying that AI is disrupting the software development industry. JetBrains, for its part, views it as an opportunity to redefine developers’ roles.
“AI is taking care of basic coding tasks,” JetBrains states, enabling developers to let their “creativity run wild and stay focused on the bigger picture.”
The newly unified AI tools leverage both internal innovations and partnerships with leading AI firms, ensuring access to “reliable, cutting-edge” solutions.
Starting with 2025.1 IDE versions, a free tier will offer unlimited code completion, local AI models, and credit-based cloud AI access. Paid tiers (AI Pro and AI Ultimate) cater to demanding workflows, while All Products Pack and dotUltimate subscriptions now include AI Pro.
AI coding agent Junie goes public
JetBrains’ AI coding agent, Junie, is now publicly available after a successful early access programme.
Designed as a “virtual collaborator,” Junie combines JetBrains’ IDE capabilities with LLMs including those from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google to tackle tasks ranging from routine code fixes to complex problem-solving.
Mike Krieger, Chief Product Officer at Anthropic, said: “JetBrains and Anthropic share a commitment to transforming how developers work. Developers rely on Claude’s state-of-the-art performance in solving complex, real-world coding tasks.
“We’re excited to see how Junie, powered by Claude, will help the global developer community create innovative things within the trusted JetBrains IDEs that customers love.”
Junie’s latest updates enable finer control and a “human-in-the-loop” approach, acting as a full co-pilot that proposes plans, answers queries, and adheres to development guidelines. The agent also prioritises code quality, freeing developers to address higher-level challenges.
Junie is compatible with IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate, PyCharm Professional, WebStorm, and GoLand. Support for PhpStorm, RustRover, and RubyMine is “coming soon.”
JetBrains upgrades AI Assistant: Smarter workflows, enhanced privacy
JetBrains’ AI Assistant has also received significant upgrades, including support for cloud models like OpenAI GPT-4.5, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Google Gemini 2.5 Pro, alongside improved local model integration. The update introduces multi-file editing via chat, refined code completion, and context-aware suggestions tailored to individual projects.
Nicolai Skabo, OpenAI’s Head of EMEA, commented: “As JetBrains’ first AI partner, we’ve witnessed their ongoing commitment to enhancing developer productivity. Junie is set to unlock exciting new possibilities globally, and we look forward to our ongoing partnership as JetBrains continues to redefine the developer experience.”
JetBrains’ AI infrastructure relies on collaborations with Google Cloud, ensuring low-latency, high-reliability performance across three continents.
Nirav Mehta, Senior Director of Product Management at Google Cloud, said: “Google’s partnership with JetBrains spans many joint initiatives over the years, including our recent collaboration to build the global infrastructure for JetBrains AI—spanning three continents, leveraging Google Cloud’s AI Hypercomputer and global network backbone.
“Witnessing JetBrains AI’s rapid evolution, innovation, and scale has been amazing. We’re excited to continue collaborating to ensure 11.4M of developers around the world benefit from the low latency, responsiveness, and high reliability of JetBrains AI.”
JetBrains emphasises that user data “stays yours,” with AI features built on principles of privacy and transparency. The company assures developers can “work confidently” knowing their code and context are protected, regardless of subscription tier.
With Junie and AI Assistant now widely accessible, JetBrains aims to set new standards for code quality and innovation. Developers can explore these tools today via the free tier or upgraded subscriptions.
