After the announcement of his Manchester City departure at the end of the 2024–25 season, Kevin De Bruyne has surprisingly been linked with a potential move to Liverpool. At 33, the Belgian playmaker is reportedly exploring options, with a return to Europe being his preference over Saudi Arabia or MLS.
A Belgian newspaper, De Standaard, suggested that Anfield could be a possible destination, given De Bruyne’s boyhood connection to Liverpool as his grandfather was a Reds supporter, and past clips hint at his early admiration for the club. Despite his legendary status and six Premier League titles, De Bruyne’s influence has slightly declined due to recurring injuries, limiting him to just 14 league starts this season. Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, values intense pressing and high work rate, raising doubts about whether the aging midfielder could fit into his system.
While a short-term deal might still provide flashes of brilliance, especially given De Bruyne’s pedigree and rivalry history with Liverpool, the move appears unlikely due to fitness concerns and high wage demands. For now, this remains one of the more intriguing rumours of the upcoming summer transfer window, but Liverpool are expected to focus on younger, long-term midfield options instead.
